Australia
The flora and fauna of Australia are so different from those of the Northern Hemisphere and the colours appear brighter and the light more intense. The shapes of the landscape alter several times during the day with deep shadows and changing light.
I have always enjoyed reading and hearing tales, myths and legends from both Ireland and the UK and when in Australia I enjoy the stories of the indigenous people, particularly the Noongar people, and enjoy incorporating various elements of the Six Noongar Seasons into my art.
Christmas
A small Christmas tree appears in each blue and white painting with coloured baubles. I had to include the sea in some, of course .
Forest
No excuses- I just love trees. I enjoy walking through woods and forests. I layer the trees giving a feeling of depth and add a little something different to each painting. Many foxes and hares travel through our garden and as for the faeries- well, this is Ireland.
Still Life
I enjoy injecting something unexpected into still life paintings such as the little red clay bird or the very red fish or the moonlit trees. I like to paint familiar objects in the house. The bowl in Dot’s lemon bowl was a present from my friend Dorothy. the vase in the fish painting is Poole Pottery, bought at a jumble sale.
Sea
The sea has always been part of my life, from when I was a child growing up in South West England to the rugged coastline of the West Cork Peninsula where I now live. When I travel to Western Australia I love snorkelling and watching the small, colourful fish dart about. I understand why some GP surgeries or Dental surgeries have fish tanks in the waiting room. It definitely calms the mind, the small repetitive movement of the fish being most meditative.
Birds
I tend to paint birds in groups of three. I used to sing Bob Marley’s ‘Don’t worry about a thing,’ with my class of 7 and 8 year olds at the start of each day. I think the idea of three birds came from that, but also may be partly because of my love of the triskelion symbol in Celtic culture.
West Cork
My immediate environment here in West Cork influences my work. The paintings and mixed media art are representative of real places, flora and fauna with the addition of imagination. Sometimes the images from Australia and Ireland intertwine and I also like that idea.
